A haori is the short, open kimono jacket Japanese men have layered over everyday clothes for centuries, and this red version does that job with real flair. Cranes are worked across a fluid polyester satin that catches light as you move, and in Japanese tradition the crane stands for peace and long life, so the print carries meaning under the shine rather than being decoration for its own sake. Cut to hip length and true to size, the jacket sits easily over a plain tee or a button-down without disturbing the fit of whatever is underneath, which is exactly what a good layering piece should do.
It reads modern rather than costume-like, so it moves comfortably from a night out to a casual weekend look, and it works just as well as a robe-style layer at home on a quiet evening. Because the satin has some sheen without being stiff, it photographs well and folds down small enough to pack for a trip or bring along to an event. The relaxed cut also means it sits well over a jacket in cooler weather, not just a bare tee.
Most people picture the haori when they think of a men's kimono, and it earns that reputation as a layer rather than a full outfit. Wear it open over a white tee and dark jeans for something easy, or over a plain shirt for a sharper look at a dinner or gathering. Because the fabric is lightweight, it carries across seasons: on its own in warmer weather, over a sweater once it cools down, and it makes an easy gift for anyone building a small collection of Japanese-inspired layers. Left open, the crane print shows fully down the front rather than folding in on itself.
Add one to your rotation for an easy layer with a story behind it. Browse more in the Male Kimono collection or see the wider Haori Jacket range.
