The Haori Jacket, Worn Open and Easy

A cool evening, an old gray tee, and a hip length layer in deep navy on top. That is the whole idea behind a haori jacket. At Zen Kimono, our Haori Jacket collection is all about the open front Japanese haori jacket, mostly cut for men and happily borrowed by women too. You put it on, leave the front open, and the outfit feels finished.

The Haori, Its Cord and Its Hidden Lining

A haori is a Japanese jacket worn open over your clothes. Traditionally it closes with a cord called the haori-himo, not a sash, and much of the time it is simply left open. With nothing to wrap or tie, it slips easily into an everyday outfit.

Our favorite part of its story: the boldest designs were often hidden on the inside lining, the haori-ura. A calm outside, something wilder kept close to the wearer.

You will see it called a haori coat, a haori kimono or simply a kimono jacket. Whatever the name, it fills a real gap in a wardrobe, somewhere between a bomber jacket and a kimono cardigan. Just don't mix it up with a robe. A kimono robe or a dressing gown belongs on the bathroom hook with your sleepwear. A haori belongs by the front door with your coats and jackets.

Think of it as a layer, not a winter coat. It lives where a denim jacket or a biker jacket would: spring, early fall, cool summer nights. And where a belted trench coat pulls in at the middle, a haori simply hangs straight.

Haori Jacket Cuts, Prints and Colors

    • Mostly men's: the kind of haori men can wear to work or to dinner. Shopping plus size? Many styles go up to 5XL.
    • Where the hem falls: mostly at the hip. The open front panels frame your belt and stop a short way below the waist, a clean line over jeans or pleated trousers.
    • Solids: plain color and a clean silhouette. A black haori is the easiest place to start.
    • Graphic prints: dragons and waves, bold enough to carry the whole outfit. They are prints, not embroidered patches.
    • Geometrics and cranes: repeating geometric patterns, and small cranes, often stitched as embroidery, for a quieter kind of detail.
    • Colors: mostly black, navy, blue and red, plus burgundy, brown, gray and green.
    • Want more length? A haori stops around the hip. For the full length of a traditional kimono, browse our Japanese Kimono collection.

    Cotton, Linen and Polyester Haoris

Cotton and polyester lead the way here, with linen in the mix. Expect a mostly matte face made for daylight, rather than the gloss you get from a silk kimono or a satin robe.

Cotton is the everyday one: breathable, soft and easy from morning to night. Linen is cooler still, a woven fabric with a slightly textured surface that lets air move through. Yes, it creases. That relaxed, lived-in drape is half the appeal, and linen softens the more you wear it. Polyester is the traveler of the three, and it creases less in a packed bag.

    Styling a Haori Jacket

Treat it as everyday outerwear that adds a little kimono style to the tees, tops and trousers you already own.

    • The go-to: a black haori, an ivory tee, faded denim and white sneakers. Or wear the jacket black on black, over a black v neck and dark jeans.
    • Warm days: a linen piece thrown over a sleeveless ribbed tank, plus shorts and sandals. At the beach it makes a handy cover up over swimwear, with hats and sunglasses doing the rest.
    • A little smarter: wear it where you would reach for a blazer. A crisp shirt with the collar buttoned, beige chinos or cropped trousers that stop at the ankle, and a dragon or wave print as the one loud thing.
    • Cooler months: layering is the point. For warmth, let the open front frame what sits beneath it: a plaid flannel shirt, a round neck knit sweater or a long sleeve tee, striped like a sailor's. On colder days, slip a thin quilted vest under it, and a scarf if the wind picks up.
    • Beyond the jacket: if you like dressing this way, our Yukata collection is a natural next step.

A Haori for Saturdays and Seaside Trips

Saturday, nowhere to be. Coffee in your slippers, soft loungewear, the window open. You pull on a cotton haori for the walk to the bakery and somehow feel dressed for the whole day.

Three days by the sea, one small bag. Your haori is on for the chilly plane cabin, off by noon, and back over your shoulders once the sea breeze turns cool at dinner. At night it lands draped over the balcony rail.

Shopping as a pair? Pick your haori here, then point the one who lives in midi dresses and flowing skirts toward our Kimonos for Women page for a floral kimono, a kimono dress or something more boho chic.

    Haori Jacket Fit Questions

    What sizes can I get?

These are mostly men's sizes, and many of our haoris go up to 5XL. Each cut runs differently, so check the listing's sizing before you order. For a boxier, oversized hang that still lets pullover hoodies and sweatshirts fit under your haori, order one size above your usual.

Can women wear a haori jacket?

Yes. Most cuts are men's, so it will likely sit a little roomier on you. That looks great over a slip dress, a maxi skirt, or a blouse with skinny jeans. With a chiffon top and heels, it gives a more feminine outfit a relaxed edge. For a closer fit, try one size down from your usual.

A good Haori Jacket never asks for attention. It waits by the door for the next cool evening and makes simple clothes look considered. Somewhere between the plain black solids and the loudest dragon print sits the one your hand will find first, every time.
