Early light on white fabric has its own glow, soft at the edges and a little blue before the sun is up. That is the mood of the White Kimono collection at Zen Kimono: clean white and warm cream kimonos that slow the pace a little. Each white kimono here is easy to wear and made for summer, bridal mornings and any day you want to feel fresh.
White goes with nearly everything in your wardrobe, from plain tees to your dressiest outfits, and looks cool on the brightest afternoon. A cream kimono is its warmer cousin, closer to beige, and gentler if bright white feels too stark.
There is also an older reason white feels special. In Japanese culture, brides traditionally wear shiromuku, an all-white traditional kimono, for a Shinto wedding. The white of that traditional dress stands for purity and a new beginning. Our robes and cardigans borrow their lines from the Japanese kimono but are meant for ordinary weeks, not Shinto ceremonies.
White and cream lead the collection, every garment in a Japanese-inspired kimono style:
This collection comes in three fabrics, and none of them is heavy: no fleece, no bulky knitwear. Cotton breathes like linen or rayon, so it is the one for hot, still days. Satin gets its glow from the weave, long smooth threads on the surface; on white, that silky sheen looks pearly at breakfast and ivory by lamplight. Its drape comes close to silk satin: flowy when you walk, settling in loose folds much like a silk kimono when you stop, and white lets you see every one of them. Polyester asks the least of you, so it suits the white piece you wear three times a week.
Where there is lace, the white takes on a textured pattern, the kind other pieces owe to embroidery.

The floral styles lean boho: add a crochet crop top, a fringed bag and denim shorts for relaxed boho chic. In autumn, wear a cream cardigan over a fine knit sweater with tights and ankle boots. It is a middle layer, not outerwear, so coats and jackets go on top. On workdays it can even stand in for a blazer over an embroidered blouse, a soft take on workwear.
A slow Sunday. Coffee, a book, a cream robe draped over your usual nightwear.
A spring trip to Japan. By day a cream cotton layer hangs open over shorts or a short sleeve dress; after dark it wraps you up while the hotel kettle boils.
A bridal morning. Curlers in, bouquet in the fridge, gowns still on their hangers while the bridesmaids do each other's hair. As the bride, you wear a white lace kimono for the getting-ready photos. Or split the colors: white for you, red for each bridesmaid, and the pictures read like one red and white kimono story. Our Red Kimono collection has the warmer half.
Is there a white kimono for men?
The solid white styles have the plainest, most unisex look, so they are a good place to start if you want a white kimono for men. Broad shoulders? Look for the styles that go past XL to 4XL. For a white wrap with an oversized, loose fit, measure chest or bust and hips, then order one size up.
What should I wear underneath?
White is honest about undergarments, so skip bright lingerie. Skin-tone underwear and bras disappear under pale fabric, and a camisole with lace trim makes a pretty layering piece. At home, whatever you sleep in. At the beach, your swimwear and nothing more.
White is a fresh start you can actually wear. Find the White Kimono that feels like your kind of morning, wrap it loosely, and let the day begin quietly.
